The Vodafone Foundation, the charitable division of the telecommunications company Vodafone, has launched a competition to promote accessible and assistive smartphone applications. The programme, named the Smart Accessibility Awards, is co-organised by AGE Platform Europe, a network of older people’s organisations, and the European Disability Forum, which represents the interests of disabled people in Europe.
Awards will be given across four categories:
• social participation: applications which help users to participate actively in society and benefit from new technologies
• independent living: applications which help users to perform daily tasks independently
• mobility: applications which enable users to move around with more freedom and safety using different transport modes
• wellbeing: applications which help improve users’ health and wellbeing
The total prize fund of €200,000 will be split equally between the four winners. The deadline for submissions to the competition is 15 October 2011.
