These are fire protected areas with their own safe route to a storey exit. They provide disabled people, unable to use stairs without assistance, with a temporary safe place to wait.

However, the use of fire refuges must be carefully planned and linked with fire evacuation plans for disabled people. More detail of these is given in both BS 5588 (Part 8) and in Part B of the building regulations, and the new Regulatory Reform guidance.
