Establishing your network PDF Print E-mail

The following checklist suggests how you could begin to develop a network of contacts if you have not already done so. Alternatively, if you have an existing network of contacts, you can use the checklist to periodically review the effectiveness of your network.

  • Who does the network contain?
List your current contacts, as well as any potential contacts
  • Why are these contacts in your network?
Consider why they are in your contact list and what benefits they bring your group.
  • Who is missing?
List those people who you would like to be part of your network, but with whom you are not currently in touch, and state why they should be included. From this, you can develop a prioritised plan on how you intend to develop your network of contacts.
  • When did you last have contact?
This may reveal how efficient your network is, and whether it might be worth re-establishing links with your contacts. It is worth making regular contact with members of the network, if only to let them know you are still around.
  • How do you keep your network informed?
It is often a good idea to provide your contacts with regular summaries of what your group is doing, and any achievements they have made.
  • How do they keep you informed?
See whether you can sign up to any regular newsletters or email bulletins to keep abreast of your contact's activities. After all, their activities will often tie in with your groups interests.
  • Do you feel your contacts really benefit you?
If yes, how do you feed this back?
If no, how do you deal with this?
