Access and inclusion should not be seen as add-ons once a building has been designed. They should be interwoven throughout the design and development process to eliminate the need for retrospective changes at a later stage.

Considering access and inclusion during the early stages will:

  • save the developer money in the long run
  • help create a functional, user-centred environment
  • lead to spaces and places that meet the needs and preferences of their local community

Role of access groups

It is useful to be able to picture where your access group’s role fits within the overarching process of developing new buildings and adapting existing ones. This section addresses the kinds of tasks your group will undertake, and offers tips on how to carry these out most effectively.

Generally speaking, your group will either be asked to do either of the following:

  • assess an existing building/space
  • comment on plans for a new development

The general process for both is explored in more detail in the rest of this section.
