The London Access Forum (LAF) is a network of local groups and individuals across London, mainly disabled and older people, who are determined to see that all new buildings are built to the highest standards of accessibility and inclusive design. Supported by Inclusion London, the LAF is about to start on an ambitious development programme to increase its numbers and effectiveness. The group meets with GLA planners in City Hall once a month to look at planning applications that are referred to the Mayor. This provides the opportunity to comment on new proposals before the buildings are built and to discuss with the planners and architects how schemes can take on board the needs of disabled and older people. The planning officers take comments to the Mayor to negotiate better access. The GLA provides an accessible meeting space at City Hall, and reimburses reasonable travel and other expenses. Led by Planning Aid for London, the London Access Forum is now launching a free, once-a-month, six-session training course for people who want to be part of the LAF planning sub-group.
