Learning Disability Week runs from 22-28 June 2009. Mencap is using this opportunity to highlight that thousands of disabled people, including 40,000 people with profound and multiple learning disabilities, need Changing Places toilets. These facilities include a hoist, changing bench and lots of space, but there are currently not a sufficient number in public places to deal with the demand. Mencap is calling for people to contact their MP about this issue, in the hope that Changing Places facilities might be incorporated into the Building Regulations. This could lead to these facilities being installed in large public buildings around the country. The charity has created a film that aims to raise awareness of the problems associated with using a standard accessible WC to change somebody. Find out more about Learning Disability Week and watch the film on the Mencap website.
