Interviews should be friendly, welcoming and informal. It is important that your potential member knows exactly where the interview is being held and who will be interviewing them. An interview is a two-way process: not only does it assess the suitability of the potential member, it also helps the interviewee decide whether the organisation meets his or her the needs.

The interviewer should make the following points clear within the interview:

  • What role the potential member would be expected to take within the group
  • What experience and skills the organisation is seeking
  • Whether the potential member would be prepared to undergo training to acquire skills or enhance their existing skills
  • What the group can offer the volunteer
