Practical aspects of volunteer recruitment

Prior to recruiting any member / volunteer you need to have prepared the following:

Application form

Background information sheet about your group

Volunteer policy

Organisation Handbook

A clear understanding of the role you require the member/ volunteer to take and also the skills they posses or need to acquire.

Someone who is good at interviewing

Recruitment procedures

Interview

Interviews should be friendly, welcoming and informal. It is important that your potential member / volunteer knows exactly where the interview is being held and who will be interviewing. An interview is a two way process, to assess the suitability of the volunteer by the organisation and to assess whether the organisation meets the needs of the volunteers by the volunteer.

The interviewer should be clear as to:

What role the potential volunteer is expected to take within the group or organisation

What experience and skills the organisation is looking for.

Whether the potential member / volunteer prepared to undergo training to acquire those skills, enhance their existing skills and learn new skills.

How they "sell" the group and the service it provides to the potential member/ volunteer and what the group can offer the volunteer.
