Notes: The Welwyn Hatfield Access Group, based in Welwyn Garden City has been active since April 1997 and became a registered charity in December 2001.  (Reg. No. 1089866). We are a local voluntary group run by and for disabled people, their families, friends and carers. Our primary aim is the elimination of physical, attitudinal and communication access barriers for disabled and limited mobility people, including elderly people and parents with toddlers and pushchairs, within our district. WHAG works closely with the District and County Councils, local retailers and service providers, especially those involved in transport matters, and the disabled population of the Welwyn Hatfield District. Currently there are 7,148 disabled people of working age, according to the Adult Care Services (ACS) and Children, Schools and Families service (CSF).

Major Achivements
1. Researched, published and distributed 750 copies of the Welwyn Garden City Access Directory and 400 copies of the Hatfield Access Directory. These provide physical access and sensory aid data for every retail/service provider outlet in both towns. The Welwyn Garden City directory was updated and re-issued in January 2006.
2. Published and distributed a leaflet for those having difficulty using public transport.
3. Compiled in conjunction with the Disability Rights Commission (DRC) a DDA reference manual entitled ‘Bringing the DDA to Life’. 986 copies were personally delivered to every retail/service provider and place of worship within the District by January 2005.
4. Held a number of DDA workshops.
5. Developed and instigated a WHAG website (www.whagaccess.org) in 2005.
6. Held a number of training seminars on aspects of planning and fire regulations in accordance with new access legislation, throughout 2006.
